LAST OUTING

Winter Men & Boys Adventure Camp Out

1st - 4th of March, 2012

Thursday Night - Sunday Afternoon

Location: South Lake Tahoe.

Outing Manager:  Joshua Hathaway

ACTIVITIES:  Snow play (forts, sledding and snow balls), hiking and exploring, skiing and snowboarding.

ITINERARY:  The first wave will leave Santa Cruz in the early afternoon on Thursday, March 1st, eating dinner somewhere along the way.  This is the group of people who are planning to Ski or Snowboard on Friday.  Friday morning after a simple breakfast of eggs and porridge we will aim to be at Sierra at Tahoe by 9:00am to set our renters and students up with their respective gear and classes.  We will spend the day on the slopes having a total blast!  Meanwhile, the second wave will be leaving Santa Cruz in the early afternoon on Friday, aiming to be at the cabin by dinner time.  We will have a communal dinner Friday night and fun and games 'til lights out.  Saturday, after the communal pancake breakfast, will be a day of sledding, snowball fights, snowman building, and snow cave digging!  Lunch will be taken care of individually.  Dinner Saturday night will be our traditional Stone Soup (everyone brings an ingredient!).  More fun and games will ensue before bedtime, of course...  Sunday we will be having a big French toast breakfast before cleaning the cabin thoroughly.   If we finish our cleaning with time to spare we will hit the snow for one last hurrah before closing our circle at 2pm and heading home.

CARPOOLING: We will be facilitating as few vehicles making the journey as we can.  Please indicate as soon as possible whether you can/want to drive and how many more passengers you can accommodate!

FOOD POLICY: we encourage locally grown organic foods (from farmers or your garden), we discourage the consumption of store bought meats at these campouts, in an effort to teach our young men and boys the sacred cycle of life we promote the use of respectful hunting practices (if you or someone you know caught it, you are welcome to consume it during this weekend campout).

OUTING FOOD:  All breakfasts and dinners (aside from Thursday) will be communal meals.  The raw material for breakfasts will be included in the fee for the trip.  Everyone will participate in the prep and cleanup of our communal meals.  As for dinners, we will have a pasta and veggies meal Friday night and a Stone Soup and bread and salad meal Saturday.  You will be asked to bring a specific item for Friday at least a week before the trip and you may bring an ingredient for the soup of your own design.  Each person will be responsible for his own lunch and snacks throughout the weekend.

EQUIPMENT:  At the bottom of this section is a link to a list of gear you will need for playing in the snow.  In these conditions it is very important that each person come equipped with the right apparel to keep himself warm and dry while we play.  Not only is it dangerous for us to get too wet or cold, but it totally sucks for us and everyone else!  It is common to get home and throw the wet gear in the dryer to be ready for the next adventure.  If you do not possess any piece of gear you need, please seek to borrow from within your community!  As we get closer to the event we will be in conversation over email and you can query this group about borrowing.  There are also some great used gear shops in Tahoe.  The following site has a great list of all the gear one needs to snowboard.  If you are not planning to snowboard then you can skip the goggles, snowboard boots, and board, but the rest is really pretty important--but you will need boots!  Most important is to use wool or synthetic materials wherever possible, as cotton holds moisture and does not insulate well.  http://www.abc-of-snowboarding.com/snowboardinggear.asp

NOTICE:   If you can not make it until Saturday you will have to get directions to our cabin prior to our departure Friday as cell phones may not work there.

RSVP.  Contact Joshua to reserve a space for everyone you are bringing as well as any confirmed guests you have invited.  Thank you.

COST:  The cost of this trip will depend significantly on what you and your boy will be doing...  The suggested donation for each participant for the lodging, breakfasts, and logistical support provided by the MEN is $25-$65.  Giving at the highest end of this scale as you can comfortably do helps us to create opportunities for others who could not otherwise afford the outing.  If even the bottom of the scale is prohibitive for you please contact the outing manager (Joshua,) ASAP, because we want to be as inclusive as possible while also being financially sustainable.  The suggested donation for unattended boys on this weekend outing is $60-$90.  Please contact me immediately if you are interested in sending your boy without a chaperon of his own so we can work out the details.

There are also definite costs associated with Snowboarding or Skiing, which you can check out at http://www.sierraattahoe.com/.  Here you will find various packages that include any combination of renat, lift tickets, and lessons.  If this will be your boy's first time on the slopes I suggest booking him a lesson unless you plan on teaching him yourself.  Please do not book any reservations without consulting Joshua first.  Our suggestion is that you rent at the resort if you need to rent because it is simpler not to have to travel with and keep track of rented gear all weekend.  Probably cheaper too.  More on Gear below.  If you plan on carpooling there may be shared gas costs, and food will be covered below.

CONFIRMATION: There are 20 total spots on this trip.  I expect to see every spot filled!  Please let me know as soon as possible whether you intend to go so you can be on the radar.  The only way to reserve a spot is to tender your deposit and turn in your waiver form(s), so please contact Joshua ASAP to get the ball rolling!!!

DONATIONS:  Donations assist us in providing these events in many ways, from providing food and condiments at the campouts to the purchase of loaner equipment (such as climbing ropes, harnesses, canoes, straw bales and arrows for archery and etc).  All contributions are greatly appreciated.
